Chiller down? Call our breakdown line now: 0121 820 8946

Evolution Cooling repairs failed industrial and process chillers for manufacturers across the West and East Midlands, from our base in Oldbury. We aim to have an engineer on site within 4 hours of your call, and we attend further afield by arrangement.

  • Contract customers: 24/7 emergency cover, prioritised dispatch.
  • Non-contract sites: we attend during working hours, and out of hours at our discretion at a premium rate.
  • Out of hours, a real person answers. Our breakdown line diverts to the whole management team.

Chillers and Cooling Systems We Repair

Our engineers work on process-critical cooling plant from all major manufacturers, including older and obsolete units.

What to Tell Us When You Call

The more we know before we set off, the more likely we are to arrive with the right parts and fix it first time. If you can, have this ready:

  • Chiller make and model, and the serial number from the data plate
  • The alarm or fault code on the controller, and a photo of the display
  • What happened just before it failed, and whether it has been reset
  • What the chiller serves (CNC machines, moulding, brewing, process water) and how critical it is
  • Whether the circuit runs on water or glycol
  • Site address, access arrangements and a contact on site

What to Do While You Wait

  • Do not keep resetting it. Repeatedly resetting a high-pressure or low-pressure trip can turn a minor fault into compressor damage. One reset is reasonable; if it trips again, leave it off.
  • Check the basics safely. Is the power on and the isolator closed? Is the pump running? Are the condenser fans turning and the coil free of debris?
  • Note what you see and hear. Unusual noises, ice on pipework or the evaporator, oil marks or hissing all help us diagnose faster.
  • Protect production. If you have a standby chiller or can reduce the process load, do so. If you need temporary cooling while repairs are carried out, tell us when you call and we will look at options.
  • Leave the refrigerant circuit alone. Refrigerant work must be carried out by F-Gas certified engineers.
Chiller Breakdown

Common Chiller Breakdowns We Attend

High-Pressure Trips (HP Alarms)

Usually blocked or dirty condenser coils, failed condenser fans, high ambient temperatures or refrigerant overcharge. Repeated HP trips stress the compressor. HP vs LP faults

Low-Pressure Trips (LP Alarms)

Most often refrigerant loss from a leak, but also a failing expansion valve, a frozen evaporator or low flow. Low-pressure problems

Refrigerant Leaks

Leaks reduce capacity, raise energy use and eventually shut the chiller down. We find and repair the leak before recharging, and record the work for your F-Gas records.

Compressor Failures

Caused by electrical faults, poor oil return, refrigerant problems or wear. We find the root cause first, so a new compressor does not fail for the same reason. Preventing compressor failures

Flow Alarms and Pump Failures

Blocked strainers, air in the system, failed pumps or incorrect glycol concentration can all trigger flow alarms. Chiller flow issues

Chiller Will Not Start

Often a safety lockout, phase loss, blown fuse, failed contactor, controller fault or an external interlock such as a flow switch.

Icing on the Evaporator or Pipework

Usually low flow, a faulty sensor, low refrigerant or glycol that is too weak for the operating temperature. Glycol concentration guide

Controller and Sensor Faults

Faulty probes and controllers cause nuisance alarms, unstable temperatures and incorrect load control. We carry common sensors and controllers on our vans.

Recent Breakdowns We Have Fixed

CNC machine chiller at a Formula 1 car manufacturing site, Northampton

A process chiller serving CNC machining failed, and the initial suspicion was a loss of refrigerant. On arrival our engineer found the refrigerant charge was not the problem: the thermostatic expansion valve (TEV) had failed. We sourced the replacement valve, returned the next day, fitted it and returned the chiller to full service.

Why it matters: a failed expansion valve can look like a refrigerant leak on the controller. Correct diagnosis avoided unnecessary refrigerant work and got the right part fitted first time.

Egg room chiller at a hatchery, Leominster, Herefordshire

The chiller serving a temperature-critical egg room had shut down on a low-pressure alarm. Our engineer traced the cause to a refrigerant leak on the condenser coil, repaired the leak and returned the system to service the same day.

Why it matters: repeated low-pressure alarms usually point to refrigerant loss. Finding and fixing the leak, rather than simply topping up, is what stops the fault coming back.

Why Maintenance Managers Call Us

Engineer on site within 4 hours

We aim to have an engineer with you within 4 hours of your call, with contract customers prioritised.

A real person answers, day or night

Out of hours, our breakdown line diverts to the whole management team, so your call always gets picked up.

Root cause first, not guesswork

Our engineers diagnose the real cause of failure so the same fault does not come back next week.

All makes, spares on the van

Trane, Carrier, ICS Cool Energy, MTA, Rhoss, Hitema, Thermocold, Hidros, CF Chillers, KKT, Climaveneta and older units. Common spares on our vans, with pumps, fans, compressors and valves stocked at our Oldbury depot.

Most emergency call-outs could have been caught earlier. A planned preventative maintenance plan picks up failing components, refrigerant loss and dirty coils before they stop production, and gives you priority 24/7 emergency response.

    Emergency Breakdown: Frequently Asked Questions

We aim to have an engineer on site within 4 hours of your call, depending on your location and engineer availability. Contract customers are prioritised.

Yes. Contract customers have 24/7 emergency cover. For non-contract sites, we attend out of hours at our discretion, at a premium rate. Our breakdown line diverts to the management team out of hours, so a real person always answers.

No. We repair air-cooled, water-cooled and glycol chillers from all major manufacturers, including older and obsolete units.

We are based in Oldbury in the West Midlands and cover the West and East Midlands, including Birmingham, the Black Country, Coventry, Leicester, Derby, Nottingham, Northampton and Herefordshire. We attend sites further afield by arrangement.

Many can. Regular maintenance catches refrigerant leaks, dirty condensers, worn contactors and failing sensors before they cause a shutdown. See our PPM plans.
